Window replacement in brick homes usually involves a little more investigation than homeowners expect. From the outside, the opening can look simple: brick on four sides, a window in the middle, and a bead of caulking around the perimeter.

That usually means checking:

- How square and level the opening is

The space between the window and structural opening also needs to be insulated and air sealed properly. A beautiful exterior caulking joint does not fix a large uninsulated gap behind the frame.
Exterior aluminum capping or trim may then be used to create a clean transition between the window and masonry. That trim is useful, especially where the brick opening is irregular, but it should not be mistaken for the primary waterproofing strategy.
A Typical Situation Behind an Old Brick Opening

On the other hand, saving money by installing over a questionable old frame can become expensive later.
The right balance depends on what is actually behind the existing window.
